MHS soccer teams have demanding slate

The Mathews High School soccer teams have managed a demanding slate of games over the past seven days, beginning a busy stretch last Wednesday against King William.

The JV squad opened the series with a 2-2 draw, seeing goals from Marvin Ouma and Aubrey Dean. The varsity girls followed with a 5-4 victory over the Cavaliers, led by a four-goal performance from Meredith Salvadori and a goal by Leah Hyde.

The varsity boys concluded the night with a 7-0 win; scoring was distributed among Noah Hurst, Eric Cardenas, Salvador Cardenas, Trent Hudson, Adam Greve and Elias Hidalgo, who netted two goals.

On Thursday, the girls’ team faced Poquoson. After a first half in which Mathews held the score to 4-0, Poquoson pulled away in the second half to reach an 8-0 final. On Friday, the boys’ programs faced Rappahannock. The JV team dropped a narrow 1-0 contest, while the varsity boys fell, 4-2. Salvador Cardenas accounted for both Mathews goals in the varsity effort.

Competition resumed Monday night with both varsity teams securing wins. The girls defeated Westmoreland, 4-1, behind three goals from Salvadori and one from Ellie Congrove. The boys earned a 9-2 victory over Carver, highlighted by a six-goal game from Henry Sowers. Greve, Justin Pressnell and Chance Higginbotham each added a goal to the final tally.

The programs were scheduled to action on Wednesday for a home doubleheader against Middlesex, including a Senior Night recognition for the Mathews girls. The senior boys will be honored in their Senior Night program the following Wednesday, May 13, when they take on the King and Queen Tigers at 6 o’clock.
