MHS runners 9th, 13th in state meet

Mathews High School harriers traveled to Great Meadows for the 2011 Group A State Cross Country meet last weekend. The MHS girls closed the season with a ninth-place finish in the state event with 240 points and the boys finished 13th with 338 points, with both squads running in a field of 16 teams.

Junior Nancy Barnhardt led the Lady Devils with a 24th-place finish in 21:32. She was followed by teammates sophomore Kate Van Emmerik at 38th in 22:15, senior Katie Phillips at 52nd in 23:09, sophomore Emily Brown at 54th in 23:11, senior Lindsey Brown at 72nd in 24:07, senior Stephanie Jeffers at 74th in 24:21 and sophomore Mallory Hurst at 76th in 24:25. The winning time in the girls’ race was 19:05.
