The Mathews High School boys’ basketball teams had a busy week that saw the JV squad pick up two wins and the varsity team pick up an unforgettable overtime victory. The JV Blue Devils went 2-1, highlighted by a sweep of the Carver Wolverines. In their first meeting at Carver on Feb. 11, Mathews built a 25-10 halftime lead and held on for a four-point win. A key moment came in the final seconds when sophomore Treye Church grabbed a clutch rebound with 12 seconds left, leading to a transition layup by eighth grader Aiden Forrest that helped seal the game. Eighth grader Marvin Ouma returned from an extended injury absence to lead the team with 12 points, while freshmen Brandon Hubbard and Church added seven points each. In the rematch at Mathews on Feb. 17, the JV team controlled the game from start to finish, jumping out to a 29-13 halftime lead and never letting up, cruising to a 48-26 victory.
