The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams traveled to Green Hill Park on Saturday to take part in the Knights Crossing Invitational, which is also where the state championships will be held this year.
The boys placed second with 148 points in the Black race and the girls placed fifth with 205 points in the White race. Chance Higginbotham led the way for the boys, putting him in ninth place out of 228 runners with a time of 17:12, and Blake Hunley finished in 12th place overall with a time of 17:22. Next for the Devils was Salvador Cardenas with a time of 18:22, Jon Jenkins (18:27), Adam Greve (18:56), Dominic Winters (19:20), Ivar Golden (19:35) and Cole Christensen (19:59).
Elizabeth Moore led the girls to fifth, ranking at 20th out of 145 runners with a time of 23:19, and in second, Allean Rowe with a time of 24:57. Coming in next for the Lady Devils were Morgan Stearns with a time of 26:58, Jordan Sadeg (27:29), Lyla Duff (28:24) and Rayann Helbig (31:21).
