The Mathews High School golf team is already three games into the 2025 season. The first matchup, on Aug. 12 against Northumberland, was a close one with the Indians edging the Devils, 174-184. Chase Ambrose had the low score for Mathews with a 42. Last Thursday against Lancaster, the Red Devils won, 182-199. Ambrose again had the low score for Mathews with a 40. On Monday, the MHS golfers picked up the team’s first win, dominating Essex, 194 to 253. Freshman Brandon Hubbard came in with the lowest overall score with a 39. “Overall, a great start for our season,” head coach Jake Johnson said. “Our program has grown significantly with more kids coming out and our last year’s team practicing in the offseason. So far, the Mathews record is 1-2 but the season is still young. I’ve never seen such excitement in golf for Mathews until now.
