MHS girls win two in tennis

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team picked up a pair of wins in recent action, shutting out the visiting Essex Trojans by a 7-0 margin on March 28. Two days later, the girls traveled to face Northampton, beating the Indians, 8-1.

Essex

In singles play, the MHS girls’ top seed Taylor Wood won, 8-2. Second seed Brooklyne Fulford shut out her opponent, 8-0. Third seed Desiree Dixon followed suit, also winning, 8-0. Fourth seed Chelsea Lowe and fifth seed Lily Jarosz won their matches by scores of 8-5 and 8-3.

The Lady Devils’ only had two doubles matches that evening against Essex. Wood and Fulford won, 8-1. And Jarosz and Carter were tied, 2-2, when that match abruptly ended.

Northampton

Mathews kept it going on March 30, with Wood, Fulford, Dixon, Lowe and Jarosz all winning their singles matches, with doubles teams of Wood/Fulford, Dixon/Carter and Lowe/Callis all winning by 8-1 scores. Mathews fell just short of a sweep with first seed Faith Lewis falling, 9-7.
