MHS girls win two against Chargers

The Mathews High School varsity softball team picked up a pair of wins against Middlesex this past week, shutting out the Chargers, 12-0, on Friday at Middlesex and beating the visitors on Tuesday, 7-3.

In Friday’s shutout win, Emily West and Morgan Crittenden shared pitching duties, combining to hold the Chargers to two hits while striking out six in five innings.

Crittenden was the top hitter for Mathews on Friday, picking up three hits (single, double and triple). Joice Small added two hits, including a double. Reese Brock, West and Chelsea Armistead also contributed doubles, while Christiana Wood, Olivia Coons and Lainie Wilson each had a single.

West went all seven innings in Tuesday’s home victory, striking out six to earn the victory. Crittenden once again had the big bat for Mathews, going 3-for-4 at the plate. The Devils had 11 hits in the contest, with Small also getting multiple hits. Defensively, the Blue Devils didn’t commit an error.
