MHS girls win soccer opener

The Mathews High School girls’ soccer team kicked off its third season at Westmoreland High last Wednesday. In a close-fought battle, the Lady Devils emerged from a 3-3 halftime tie to edge past the Eagles, 5-4.
In the first half of play, Lauren Johnson scored two Mathews goals, with Hailey Denkinger scoring the third goal, as well as picking up an assist.
Starting off the second half, MHS fell behind by one goal until late into the game. Johnson scored the last two goals for the Blue Devils, with another assist by Denkinger.
The Lady Devils had a total of 13 shots on goal against the Eagles, as well as goalkeeper Kristin Blake with six saves out of the 10 shots on goal.
Following Spring Break, the MHS girls will travel to New Kent High School on Monday to compete in their second game of the season, starting at 6 p.m.
