MHS girls win first round of state tennis tournament

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team advanced all the way to Monday’s VHSL Class 1 state tournament before falling to the Rappahannock Raiders, 5-0.
The season-ending loss came after Friday’s thrilling 5-3 win over William Campbell High School in the VHSL state quarterfinals. The Lady Devils battled for over four hours in 90+ degree heat to come away with the win over the Generals at the match, which was held at Campbell County school.
The MHS girls recorded singles wins by #2 seed Liberti Carter (6-1, 6-3), #3 seed Ella Ward (6-1, 6-1) and #4 seed Delaney Boatman (6-2, 6-2). The Lady Devils’ #2 seed doubles team of Ward and Boatman turned in a 6-1, 6-3 win to move Mathews one victory closer to the win. The match was sealed by a tremendous comeback by the top-seeded doubles team of Lyla Duff and Carter. Despite dropping their first set, they stormed back to take the second set forcing a match tiebreaker which they handily won 10-2.
