MHS girls make it into the win column

The Mathews High School varsity and junior varsity girls’ basketball teams picked up their first wins of the season in the past week, with the JV girls posting a 32-26 victory over Poquoson on Saturday and the varsity girls making it on the win column as they edged Washington and Lee by a 34-32 margin Tuesday night.

The week started out on Friday with the girls on the road facing the Lancaster Red Devils. Mathews started off slow, trailing Lancaster, 18-9, at the end of the first half. In the second half, MHS fought back to close the gap to six points by the end of the third quarter. Lancaster maintained its lead in the final quarter to win, 41-30.

Ellie Armistead led the way for Mathews with 11 points, followed by Yolanda Fells (nine), Stacie Thomas (eight) and Abbie Hudgins with (two points).

On Saturday, the MHS girls traveled to Poquoson, falling to 0-3 on the season following a 49-39 loss to the Islanders. Mathews kept the game close and by halftime only trailed ...
