After a rough round of games in the past week, including a 45-39 loss to Northumberland on Monday, Dec. 15, and the following Tuesday a tough 44-28 loss to Colonial Beach, the Lady Blue Devils were ready to take on the Middlesex Chargers at their home court and head into the holiday break with a win. In the varsity-only contest, Mathews came away with the win on the road, 40-37. The Chargers were high in spirits, with their pep band and cheerleaders getting the crowd loud and rowdy, though the Blue Devils also had a spirited crowd rooting the girls on. This set up the game for a thrilling matchup between the two teams. The first quarter of last Thursday’s game started off strong, with the Devils winning the opening tipoff. Mathews sophomore Elizabeth Moore set the tone offensively for the first quarter, scoring 10 points and with six of those points being two three-pointers, as the Lady Devils jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the first quarter.
