After advancing to the VHSL Class 1 state playoffs for the first time in the program’s history, the Mathews High School girls’ soccer team fell on Tuesday night in the state quarterfinals to West Point, 6-0.
Mathews held the home-standing Pointers to a single goal in the first half, but couldn’t restrain West Point’s offense following halftime.
The Lady Devils earned a spot in the state playoffs with an 8-0 win over Westmoreland in the regional quarterfinals. Mathews then advanced to the regional semifinals, falling to West Point, 9-1. However, MHS earned a state berth because the tournament was a combined Region A/B competition.
Next year’s team will be losing nine seniors, who graduated on May 31—players Shay Conrow, Lorena Carballo, Kaylee Russell, Hailey Denkinger, Kristin Blake, Katherine Murphy, Suki Zheng, Baylee Bell and team manager Layla McBurney. The team was coached by Mike Congrove with Chris McBurney serving as assistant coach.
