The Mathews High School girls’ volleyball team is one win away from earning a spot in the state tournament.
The Lady Devils, the sixth seed in the Class 1, Region A tournament, went on the road Monday and defeated the third-seeded Northampton Yellow Jackets, 3-2.
With that win, the MHS girls advance to the regional semifinal game tonight, Thursday, Nov. 6, against second-seed Lancaster. The winner of that game will play for the regional title on Tuesday. Regardless of the outcome of that game, the winner of tonight’s Mathews-Lancaster game (which begins at 5 o’clock) will earn a berth in the VHSL Class 1 state tournament, which begins on Saturday, Nov. 15.
Monday’s game against the Yellow Jackets started off well for Mathews, who took the first set. In the second and third sets, Northampton came back to take a 2-1 lead.
