The Mathews High School varsity softball team split a pair of games recently, falling on the road last Thursday to Westmoreland High School 3-2 and bouncing back on Tuesday with an 18-5 win at home against Northumberland.
Avery Thomas and Morgan Crittenden pitched a stellar game last Thursday, but the MHS defense gave up three unearned runs as Mathews fell to Westmoreland. Crittenden had two of the Lady Devils’ three hits, a pair of singles, and also drew a walk. Ashton Hudgins had a single and a walk.
Thomas was on the mound again on Tuesday, earning the win in spite of the Indians jumping out to an early 4-0 lead. Coming back from a basketball injury that sidelined her for the first few games of the season, Reese Brock collected three hits. Hudgins also had three hits in the win. Thomas, Addy Lowe and Christiana Wood also had multiple hits in the win.
The MHS varsity girls will host Essex today, Thursday, March 30, starting at 5 p.m.
