MHS girls beat Lancaster in OT, 33-31

After a long winter break, the Mathews High School girls’ basketball teams hit the road on Friday to compete against Rappahannock. While the JV Blue Devils fell to the Raiders, the varsity squad picked up a win. On Monday, the MHS JV and varsity squads defeated the visiting Lancaster Red Devils, with the varsity girls winning a thriller in overtime, 33-31. On Thursday, the Lady Blue Devils hit the road to face the King William Cavaliers. On Tuesday night, the MHS girls’ teams will host Charles City, beginning at 5:30. Rappahannock In Friday’s contest at Rappahannock, the JV game got off to a slow start with neither team scoring in the opening minutes. Mathews was up by a 6-2 margin heading into the second quarter. The Raiders rallied to take a 14-8 halftime lead. Trailing 20-13 with two minutes to go, the Mathews girls fought back but fell short to the Raiders at the final buzzer, 26-21.
