MHS girls beat K&Q, fall to Grafton

The Mathews High School Lady Devils played King and Queen Friday and Grafton Saturday in a pair of home basketball games. The varsity and JV teams had not played in several weeks because of the holiday break and bad weather.

The varsity girls posted a convincing 58-19 win over the visiting Tigers on Friday, but fell to Grafton the following night, 58-33.

In Friday’s game, coach C.K. Ambrose was able to play his whole bench, and most contributed to the lopsided win. Ellie Armistead led with 25 points, followed by Stacie Thomas with 16, Aleya McCurry with seven, Hannah Robins with four, and Malia Lewis, Abbie Hudgins, and Connie Johnson each with two.

The Grafton game was a different story. Mathews knew it would be a tough game from the get-go, competing against one of the top 4A teams in the absence of starters Abbie Hudgins and Yolanda Fells.
