The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team defeated three opponents at home last week, falling Monday night on the road to West Point.
Following the thrilling come-from-behind win over Essex on Sept. 22, the Devils faced Northampton the following night. Mathews started off strong and took the first two sets, but Northampton came back to win the third. The Lady Blue Devils ended the game in the fourth set to win the match, 3-1.
Northampton
The first set ended, 25-18. Northampton struggled to keep up in the second set; the score was 25-7. In the third set, Northampton won, 27-25, but Mathews brought it back and won the fourth, 25-17.
Nora Suthard led the team in kills with 12, Carter Hayes a close second with 10. Addy Lowe along with Suthard had two solo blocks. Suthard also served a total of three aces.
Charles City
On Thursday, Sept. 25, the Devils hosted the Charles City Panthers. The varsity girls swept the Lady Panthers, 3-0. The set scores were 25-7, 25-17 and, lastly, 25-10. ...
