The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team opened its 2025 regular season with a straight-set win last Wednesday against the visiting Colonial Beach Drifters.
Starting with the first set, the Lady Blue Devils won, 25-20. Along with the first, Mathews put an end to the second set, also 25-20. The third set was either the match for Mathews or Colonial Beach had to win to keep the game going. The Lady Drifters put up a fight, but the last set ended, 25-22, Mathews.
Highlights included Carter Hayes and Nora Suthard leading the team with four kills each. Hannah Davis served a total of 16 serves and seven of her serves were aces. Addy Lowe led the team with two solo blocks and Hannah Davis with one.
The JV girls also had a hard-fought game against the Drifters, but came up on the losing end. The Devils won the opening set, 26-24, with Colonial Beach tying the contest at one win apiece, beating Mathews, 25-14, forcing a third and deciding match. Colonial Beach won that set, 15-8, to take...
