MHS girls beat Chargers, Islanders

The Mathews High School varsity softball team has come around in recent action, beating Middlesex and Poquoson this past week.

Last Thursday, the Lady Devils made quick work of the Middlesex Chargers, winning 12-2. Caroline Crittenden led the team with four hits. Kelsey Ryan, Abbie Hudgins, Victoria Bing, Shayla Wheeler, Emily West had two hits each, while Joice Small and Hannah Robins contributed one hit each in the victory.

While Mathews collected 16 hits, the Chargers were only able to get seven—six off starting pitcher West and one off closer Abbie Hudgins. West and Hudgins finished the game with three strikeouts apiece.

Mathews extended its win streak to three games on Monday with a 9-7 win over Poquoson. The Lady Devils started out behind three runs in the top of the third and down one in the top of the seventh, but were able to get several two-out rallies to keep them in the game.
