Following Friday’s 44-0 loss on the road to Colonial Beach, the Mathews High School football program has forfeited the remainder of its 2025 season.
MHS Athletic Director Amy O’Neil made the announcement Monday afternoon via Facebook. “First and foremost, we want to commend and celebrate our players for everything they have accomplished over the past two years,” she wrote, referring to the return of Mathews football after it had been suspended in 2021 with the 2022 and 2023 seasons canceled due to low numbers.
“Our shared goal—to bring football back to Mathews County—was achieved, and these young men have carried that torch with pride,” she wrote.
The hope, she wrote, was to build on last year’s strong foundation. “However, our limited roster and the increasing number of injuries have made it clear that continuing would not be in the best interest of our players’ health and safety.
