MHS falls to 0-3 with loss to Lancaster

Three weeks into the 2017 season, the Mathews High School varsity football team is still looking for its first win. On Saturday afternoon, the Blue Devils traveled to Lancaster, falling to the host Red Devils, 60-14. 

Mathews got on the scoreboard in the first quarter as Jarius Monroe ran back a kickoff 85 yards for a score. This was the third week in a row that Monroe has scored off a kick return.

In spite of Monroe’s touchdown, the Blue Devils trailed their Red Devil counterparts by a 39-6 margin at halftime. he provided the other MHS touchdown in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter off a 15-yard run. Jovan Johnson scored the two-point conversion to round out the scoring for Mathews. Monroe finished with 64 rushing yards, while Johnson had 15. Johnson and Chance Spencer shared QB duties; Spencer completed one of four passes, while Johnson connected on one of two pass attempts. Wide receiver Justin Ashberry had seven receiving yards.
