MHS crew competes in Darrell Winslow Regatta; women’s quad 3rd

The Mathews High School crew traveled to Sandy Run Regional Park in Occoquan Saturday to compete in the Darrell Winslow Regatta, which was hosted by the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association.

Thirty-one Virginia schools were in attendance with approximately 1,515 athletes competing. Mathews entered the Men’s Senior Four, Women’s Senior Quad and the Women’s and Men’s Novice Four events. Both the senior boats qualified for the finals, with the Women’s Senior Quad taking third. 

First to race was Sean Carlson, Cole Wheeler, Henry Hospodar, Josh Anthony and coxswain Savannah Hartlove. Racing in the second of two qualifying heats, the Blue Devils took second behind Broad Run to advance to the final. In a tight final, Mathews placed fifth, with winner W.T. Woodson almost 10 seconds out but second through fifth places only separated by three seconds.
