The Mathews High School boys’ cross country team claimed the Region A title last Thursday at the West Point Country Club, while the MHS girls placed fourth as a team.
The Blue Devil runners competed against teams from Middlesex, Northampton, Rappahannock and the host Pointers in the regional championships.

Mathews senior Chance Higginbotham was also crowned the individual regional champion, finishing the course in a time of 16:52, more than 20 seconds ahead of the second-place runner from West Point.
In addition to Higginbotham, Mathews also had the fifth-place finisher, senior Jon Jenkins (18:18), juniors Ivar Golden (who tied for sixth place with a time of 18:42) and Adam Greve (who placed eighth with a time of 18:44) and senior Blake Hunley (11th place, 19:02). Together, the top five finishers accounted for 32 points, well ahead of second-place Middlesex (53 points).
