MHS boys win district soccer trophy

The Mathews High School soccer teams had a busy week of games, starting with a close win for the girls and ending with a historic goal on the road.

Last Wednesday, the Mathews girls’ varsity team beat Middlesex, 5-4, in a game that went into overtime. Meredith Salvadori scored four of the goals for Mathews. The game stayed alive thanks to Leah Hyde, who scored the tying goal to send the match into extra time. That same night, the boys’ varsity defeated Middlesex, 3-1. Elias Hidalgo, Henry Sowers and Trent Hudson each scored a goal to help secure the win.

On Monday, the teams traveled to West Point. The JV team lost, 10-2, but Marvin Ouma and Brijido Fraire both managed to score for Mathews. The girls’ varsity lost their game, 7-1, but made history as the first team in the region to score a goal against West Point this year.

The boys’ varsity team had better luck, winning 3-1 with goals from Chance Higginbotham, Elias Hidalgo and Salvador Cardenas. The win also earned the team the Tidewater District championship trophy.

On Wednesday, the boys’ varsity was scheduled to play at home against King and Queen for Senior Night. At the same time, the girls’ varsity team was set to play an away game at Poquoson High School.

As the spring season winds down, the girls’ team will host Northampton at 6 p.m. Friday.
