MHS boys post wins over Chargers, Drifters

As the regular season winds to a close, the Mathews High School varsity baseball team earned a couple of hard-fought wins against visiting teams from Middlesex and Colonial Beach.

Middlesex

The Blue Devils outplayed the Chargers last Thursday, winning a 3-2 contest. Senior Justin Jones opened the game on the mound and proceeded to throw 4 2/3 innings of two-run baseball. Jones struck out three batters, only allowing four hits.

Senior Christian Blue took over in the fifth inning, finishing the game for the Blue Devils with two strikeouts and allowing two hits. Mathews defense was stellar in the field recording 22 out of 27 total outs. After a scoreless game until the fourth inning, both teams entered the fifth tied, 1-1. The Chargers pulled ahead in the top of the inning, but the Mathews Blue Devils battled back to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth.

Senior Jordyn Cosby was the star of the Blue Devils’ offense, driving in two of the three runs, while also recording two hits. Sophomore Zac Salvadori finished the night with one hit. The final run for the Blue Devils was scored on a fielding error by the Chargers with a hit from junior Blake Hunley.

Colonial Beach

On Friday, the Blue Devils played another close game at home, this time against the Colonial Beach Drifters, taking the win with a score of 6-5. Freshman Liam Penick was the starting pitcher for the Blue Devils, pitching three innings and striking out two batters. Freshman Hunter Horsley came in as relief pitcher in the fourth inning to finish the game.

Horsley recorded four strikeouts, allowing one run. Cosby again led the team with two hits and two RBIs. Hunley also contributed to the win with one hit and two RBIs. Hunley’s hit pulled the team ahead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Mathews Blue Devils had one more regular season game away against the West Point Pointers, scheduled for Wednesday, May 21. Regional play will begin next week for the Blue Devils.
