The Mathews High School varsity baseball team picked up three wins last week, defeating Northampton, West Point and Nandua. The win streak came to an end on Tuesday with the Blue Devils falling to Middlesex, 2-0.
Northampton
The Mathews varsity Blue Devils defeated the Northampton Yellow Jackets, 11-6, at home last Wednesday, April 23. The Blue Devils started senior Christian Blue on the mound. Blue pitched 5 1/3 innings, striking out seven batters and allowing five runs, only three earned. Senior Colin Moore came in to relieve Blue in the top of the sixth inning. Moore recorded three strikeouts and one unearned run for the save.
The Blue Devils started off hot at the plate, scoring nine of the 11 runs in the first three innings. Junior Blake Hunley and freshman Hunter Horsley led the team with three hits and two RBIs each. Blue also had a strong showing on offense with two hits and three RBIs.
