MHS boys place 5th in state XC meet

Mathews High School boys’ cross-country runners placed fifth as a team and while the MHS girls didn’t compete as a team, they had several who ran individually at Saturday’s VHSL Class 1 state championships at Green Hill Park in Salem.
Mathews had two runners who made the All-State team: senior Chance Higginbotham, who led the MHS boys with a time of 16:41, placing 11th overall; and sophomore Elizabeth Moore, who placed 13th among female runners with a time of 21:25.
The boys’ and girls’ Mathews cross-country team competed at the VHSL State Championship on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Green Hill Park in Salem. The boys placed fifth with a total of 123 points.
In addition to Higginbotham, the MHS boys’ team included senior Salvador Cardenas (18:05, 27th place overall), senior Jon Jenkins (18:06, 28th place), junior Ivar Golden (18:32, 38th place), Dominic Winters (19:02, 53rd place), junior Adam Greve (19:08, 55th place) and freshman Cole Christensen (20:58, 88th place).
