MHS boys notch first basketball win in King William nailbiter

The Mathews High School boys’ basketball team finally made it into the win column this week, following a thrilling 59-58 victory Tuesday night in front of a home crowd over the King William Cavaliers.

Prior to Tuesday’s win, the Blue Devils suffered a pair of defeats against Northern Neck foes Rappahannock and Northumberland. Meanwhile, the junior varsity boys posted three victories over the Raiders, Indians and Cavaliers to improve to 3-3.

Rappahannock

The week started off last Wednesday with Mathews hosting Rappahannock in the second matchup between the two teams this season. Mathews didn’t fare any better on its home court, falling to the Raiders, 75-65.

Jarius Monroe was the top scorer for MHS with 14 points, followed by Elijah Willis and Will Hutcheson who both finished the night with 12. The rest of the team’s scoring came from Caleb Thomas (eight points), Christian Williams (seven) and Jalen Matthews, Damien Walters and Tylon Forrest (four points each...
