MHS boys, girls win district meet

After winning last week’s Tidewater District meet, the MHS boys and girls cross country teams will return to Eastern State today to compete in the Region 1A meet.

In the district competition, the two MHS teams dominated the competition. The Mathews girls posted a team score of 29, far ahead of second-place Middlesex (56), while the Blue Devil boys scored a 26, likewise far ahead of their nearest competitor, West Point (60). The MHS boys also had the Tidewater District MVP, Nasir Thomas, who completed the Eastern State course with a time of 18:25 to win the race.

 In the girls’ race, the first Mathews runner to cross the finish line was Abbie Hudgins, who came in third with a time of 22:18. A large pack followed close behind: Brittany Ottarson (23:19), Rileigh Betz (23:21), Jaysen Hall (23:34) and Connie Johnson (23:39).
