The Mathews High School varsity baseball season came to an end last Thursday, with the team losing 6-2 to the visiting Lancaster Red Devils in the regional quarterfinal game.
Senior Justin Jones started on the mound pitching four innings. Jones struck out four batters and allowed five runs. Junior Danny Hogge relieved Jones in the fifth inning, striking out two and allowing one run.
The Mathews offense wasn’t able to produce enough runs to tighten the score, stranding 11 runners on base. Senior Blue Devils stood out on offense with Christian Blue recording two hits and one RBI. Senior Colin Moore had a good eye at the plate drawing three walks out of his four plate appearances, and senior Jordyn Cosby recorded a hit.
Mathews Varsity Blue Devils showed a lot of growth throughout the season, under first-year manager Dallas Wagner, finishing fourth in the region with a record of 11-7. Many of the players were recognized on the Tidewater All District Team. First-team recognition went to Hunter Horsley (second base), Colin Moore (outfield), and Jordyn Cosby (first base). Second-team recognition went to Justin Jones (pitcher), Zac Salvadori (catcher), Christian Blue (third base) and Hayden Owens (designated hitter). While the team will miss the six graduating seniors, they are looking forward to continuing to build the baseball program and appreciate the fans that came out to cheer them on this season.
