MHS baseball, softball, soccer begin regionals

The Mathews High School baseball and softball teams hope to begin regional play today, depending on weather conditions. The MHS baseball team, the fourth seeded team in the Region 1A tournament, will take on fifth seed Essex.

The MHS girls, meanwhile, will host Northampton. Both games were scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Thursday, although that may change based on field conditions. (The baseball and softball games had been planned for Wednesday, but postponed because of the rain).

The MHS varsity soccer team, meanwhile, was scheduled to travel yesterday for its first post-season game. The Devils ended its regular season with a record of 3-7-2, which makes the Devils the sixth seed in the regional tournament. They will travel to Northampton to face the third-seed Yellow Jackets. That game was set to begin at 6 o’clock.

“It’s been a tough season, but we keep moving forward,” head coach Geoffrey Gregory.
