The Mathews High School boys’ outdoor track team placed third, while the MHS girls came in sixth in the VHSL Group 1A Regional Championship meet, which was held last Thursday at Charles City High School.
Boys
For the boys, senior Donovan Forrest won both the 100-meter dash and 110-meter hurdles, while placing third in the 200-meter dash. Fellow senior Gavin Dustin won the 800-meter run, and came in third in the high jump. Senior Keith Taylor placed third in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump.
Chance Higginbotham came in third in the 3,200-meter run, with Jon Jenkins right behind him in fourth place. Adam Dustin also earned a spot in the state tournament with his fourth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.
The 4×400 relay team of Jerrell Johnson, Seth James, Gavin Dustin and Keith Taylor placed first, while the 4×800 relay team of James, Adam Greve, Gavin Dustin and Taylor turned in a season’s best time to place third.
Girls
For the girls, Elizabeth Moore won both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, while Nora Suthard won the triple jump and placed third in the long jump. The girls’ 4×400 relay team (Jordan Sadeg, Dynasty Young, Lorena Carballo and Suthard) placed third. Sadeg also placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.
Overall, out of 26 events in last week’s meet, Mathews athletes won seven. “I am very happy with the team’s performance yesterday,” coach Tony Forrest said on Friday. “We over performed.”
The top four finishers in the regional meet earned spots in this weekend’s VHSL Class 1/2 Outdoor Track State Championships, which will be held on Friday and Saturday at James Madison University.
