The Mathews High School wrestling team hosted Saturday’s Super Regional tournament, placing first out of 12 teams. With the win, this is the third consecutive year that the MHS wrestling team was crowned the regional champion.
Mathews High School head coach Josh Schaible, meanwhile, was named Region A Coach of the Year, after being presented this award at last year’s regional tournament.
Ten MHS wrestlers did well enough to advance to next weekend’s VHSL Class 1 Wrestling State Championships, including four Mathews wrestlers who won their individual weight classes.
Wrestlers who will be competing in the state tournament at the Salem Civic Center will be Ivan Schaible (157 lbs.), Darin Echeverria (165 lbs.), Richard Hahn (175 lbs.), Jesse Monastyrly (150 lbs.), Roane Gray (144 lbs.), Jayden Boyd (138 lbs.), Salvador Cardenas (132 lbs.), Franklin Cardenas (126 lbs.), Zac Salvadori (120 lbs.), and Vanessa Boyd (106 lbs.).
Schaible, Salvadori and the Cardenas brothers all placed first in their individual weight classes. Hahn placed second in his weight class. Echeverria, Gray, Vanessa Boyd and Monastyrly all placed third in their weight class, followed by Jayden Boyd, who placed fourth in the 138 lbs. weight class.
Vanessa Boyd is the second female at MHS to attend states at Salem, as the VHSL sport is dominated by male wrestlers. The first Mathews girl to attend was Alexis Deagle, where she placed second in the 106 lbs. weight class in 2023. Boyd placed third in the Super Regional tournament this weekend, after pinning her opponent from Northampton High School.
The Mathews wrestling team will continue to practice until they depart from MHS on Friday, Feb. 21, to take part in the first day of the two-day state tournament.
