Menchville shut out the Gloucester High School varsity softball team, 11-0, last Thursday at GHS. The Dukes could not muster a hit on the day and had only one base runner in the game. Leighann Harper reached base with one out in the fifth inning on an infield error.
Gloucester gave up two runs in the first inning then gave up multiple runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Sierra West (5-4) pitched well at times where seven of the 11 runs were unearned. The Dukes committed six errors that led to the seven unearned runs.
“It is tough to find success when you do not hit, but committing six errors leading directly to seven unearned runs put us in a deep hole we could not get ourselves out of,” said Gloucester Coach Red Lindsay.
The Dukes will take their 7-4 regular season record to Stoney Run Athletic Complex in Newport News on Monday to face Nansemond River in the opening round of the regional tournament. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m
