The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a public "Pardon Our Dust" meeting at 7 p.m. next Thursday, Sept. 5, at Gwynn’s Island Civic Center to discuss plans for the upcoming project to rehabilitate the Route 223 bridge over Milford Haven.

This bridge connects Gwynn’s Island with the mainland. Cars and trucks crossing the Mathews County bridge will share one lane from shortly after Labor Day until April 2014, VDOT spokesperson Kelly Hannon said.

Northbound and southbound traffic will take turns crossing the bridge in a single open travel lane, Hannon said, with temporary traffic signals to be placed at each end of the 729-foot long bridge to control traffic during the project.

Construction will begin on the southbound side of the bridge, Hannon said, with the southbound lane closed and traffic sharing the northbound lane. Barrels and channeling devices will be used to separate traffic from the work zone on the bridge.
