The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office is sponsoring a Women’s Safety Night from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, at The Shores of Cedar Point on North River Road, courtesy of owner Kelly O’Toole. Spearheaded by Deputy Deshun McGinnis, the event will include talks by law enforcement officers and demonstrations of defensive techniques to provide women with empowerment, motivation, strategies, and techniques. It is free of charge, but attendance is limited to 100 participants, so advance registration is required. Among the speakers will be Sheriff April Edwards, Mathews 911 Communications Center Manager Laura Carson, Investigator Michael Rice, women’s empowerment coach LeZandra McKeon, and a Brazilian Jujutsu blackbelt instructor. Dinner will be provided free of charge by Richardson’s Café in Mathews, with drinks by The Bean Spot and The Vintage Pearl.
