McCrearys fund nursing program at Riverside

Robert and Susan McCreary of North have funded a program at Riverside Health System for nurses who serve the Middle Peninsula.

The George T. Abernathy Oncology Nursing Residency Program honoring Susan McCreary’s late father will begin this year. The McCrearys’ gift to the Riverside Foundation has made the program possible, a release said. Abernathy was an executive at Newport News Shipbuilding and a member of the original Riverside Hospital Board of Managers from 1951 to 1984, and a board member for Walter Reed when the hospital opened in 1977. He died in 1984. George and his wife Estelle purchased Green Mansion in Mathews County in 1969; the McCrearys reside there now.
