May Faire celebration returns May 6

The Mathews Historical Museum will hold May Faire, its annual Spring Heritage Festival, on Saturday, May 6.

May Faire celebrates the county’s heritage, with each year exploring a different theme. This year, the theme is “Celebrating Teachers, Schools & Community: Over a Hundred Years of Public Education in Mathews County.”

In addition to several new exhibits in the museum, located at 200 Main Street, May Faire will bring “Conversations with our Teachers” in the historic courthouse, musical performances, children’s activities, a Maypole dance, a pound cake contest and craft vendor booths.

John A. Caramia Jr., chairman of the board of directors, said the May Faire committee is looking for volunteers to help in all areas of May Faire. To volunteer or more information, contact May Faire co-chairs Caramia (912-704-9203) or Cindy Roman (804-384-2604) or email mathewsvamuseum@gmail.com.

May Faire began in 2017 with a look at the county’s founding period in 1790; the next year concentrated on the 1950s, and in 2019, there was a focus on honoring the county’s servicemen and women.

A two-year COVID-19 hiatus followed. May Faire resumed in 2022 with the theme of Celebrating Mathews Watermen.
