Mathews track competes at state championships

After two months of all-afternoon meets, combating the elements of the weather, and most importantly, long hours of hard work and practice, the road has come to an end for the Mathews High School track teams, whose representatives traveled to Radford University on Saturday to compete in the Group A State Championships.

The effort shown by those members that qualified to get here paid off with an overall finish of 28th place for the men out of 43 teams, while Radford High took the men’s title with 67 points and James River won in the girls’ group with a score of 62.

On the field, Jesse Ingram fought to a 12th place finish in the long jump with a leap of 20’08.5". On the track, Shyanne Gordon finished her season with 19th in the 100m hurdles at 18.77 seconds, while Ingram took 14th in the 100m with 11.39 seconds.
