Mathews tennis tops 3A Tabb

The Mathews High School tennis team was prepared for battle when it traveled to Tabb on Monday, earning a 7-2 win over the Class 3A Tigers.

Top-seeded player Chloe Sanderson played against Emily Beckner. While every point was close, Sanderson lost, 1-6, 0-6. Mathews’ number two-seed, Sarah Brown, was up against Rachael Nicolettay, losing 2-6, 2-6.

At number three, Anne Stewart clashed with Tabb’s Rachel McNamason, used lots of topspin, and gave Mathews its first win of the day, 6-2, 6-2. Avery Betz, number four, was up against Anna Vargas. Betz won a close first set 7-6 with 7-2 in the tiebreaker. Betz lost the second set, 2-6, then pulled off a 10-6 win in the third set 10-point super tie-breaker. At number five, Caroline Evans breezed through her match against Faith Persaud, 6-2, 6-0. Sixth-seed Alex Mills played against Madison Cannon for a 6-1, 6-2 win.
