Mathews supervisors to consider budget increase

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on a proposed $1.134 million increase in the FY2026 budget at 6 p.m. next Thursday, Dec. 18, in the historic courthouse on Court Street.
The budget adopted by the board in June this year was for a total of $36,356,366. The increase will bring the budget to $37,490,623, or 3 percent more than the original amount.
The advertisement for the proposed budget shows an increase of $1,063,517 in general fund expenditures. The categories with proposed increases are: legislative, general and financial—$292,462; public safety—$238,211; public works—$2,211; transfers to schools for operations—$39,353; and parks, recreation and culture—$44,612. Increases in capital outlay of $315,000 and fleet of $131,668 will come from the meals tax funds.
