Mathews students take part in FCCLA conference

Students from the Thomas Hunter Middle School and Mathews High School chapters of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) represented Mathews County at the 2024 State Leadership and Recognition Conference, which was held this past weekend in Virginia Beach.

A dozen seventh and eighth graders from THMS and 10 members from MHS took part in the event, competing in a number of events. The THMS students were led by adviser Michelle Williams, while adviser Cynthia Hayes and chaperone Demetria Jones accompanied the Mathews High School attendees.

On Friday, four THMS students volunteered as STAR attendants and eight students competed in four events. During Sunday’s awards ceremony, Mya Schroeder and Lewis Burcher earned a Silver Medal in Promote and Publicize FCCLA with their project: Expanding Programs in a Rural Community.
