Mathews rowers compete in sprints

The Mathews High School crew competed against Gloucester and the Williamsburg Boat Club juniors on Saturday at Chickahominy Riverfront Park in Williamsburg.

With some wind and a stiff current it was decided to cordon off 500 meters in the creek adjacent to WBC’s launch dock and run best out of three sprint races in the standard junior event categories.

Mathews entered varsity men’s and women’s singles, doubles, fours and eights and novice level fours and eights. For the men’s varsity, Sebastian Knebl, Fletcher Rich, Zach Cummings and Landon Hudgins and coxswain Ailiegh Daniel were the core of their events, combining with novice Hunter Morton and GHS rowers James Raha, Jeb Hutson and Zane Musik-Williams and MHS cox Rachel Witt in their two out of three win in the varsity eight.

For the MHS women’s varsity four win, novice coxswain Lily Baucom drove Katelyn James, Olivia Wood, Witt and Taylor Hummel to a three out of three top finish in their sprints. The...
