The Mathews County Planning Commission, meeting on Tuesday night, reviewed the FY2027 Capital Improvement Plan and forwarded it to the board of supervisors with a recommendation for approval. With funding from the $12 million bond issuance recently approved by county supervisors, the total allocated to items in the 2027 CIP is $6,885,773. Expenditures are largely allocated to school maintenance projects totalling $3.08 million and a single allocation of $2.8 million to the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department for the department’s ongoing construction of the new Station 1. School projects include $1,468,599 for new non-proprietary controls for Mathews High School and Mathews Elementary School, with another $348,272 targeted for FY 2028; $853,282 to replace the HVAC chiller at the high school and the chiller and boiler at the elementary school; $350,000 for a reverse osmosis water system; $250,000 to replace lighting at Mathews High School; $100,000 for a study on consolidating the schools;...
