Mathews Outdoor Club holds inaugural regatta

Sixteen paddlers, ranging in age from 13 to 72, completed the circumnavigation of Gwynn’s Island on Saturday in the inaugural Islander Regatta, which was sponsored by the Mathews Outdoor Club. The course exceeded nine miles.MOC president Christine Johnson partnered with Will Berg of Farm Boards and co-owner of the Islander Hotel Debbie Gibson to organize the regatta.

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 66 provided regatta safety zone support around the paddlers, alerting other boaters to lower their speed and give way to the paddlers and kayakers.

Regatta participants crossed the Milford Haven channel between the Gwynn’s Island bridge and the Hole in the Wall channel to the Chesapeake Bay, then around Cherry Point, to complete the circumnavigation.

The USCG Auxiliary crew followed the kayakers up the Chesapeake Bay side of Gwynn’s Island. They also provided a radio watch for the paddlers with Coast Guard Station Milford Haven in case of emergency.
