Mathews netters sweep New Kent, Essex

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team went into the week of spring break on a roll, posting 9-0 wins over New Kent and Essex.

On March 31, New Kent came to Mathews to make up a rained-out match from the previous week. In singles, Morgan Johnson defeated Claire Morris, 8-6; Ashley Hudgins beat Jessi Goertner, 8-2; Rachel Stewart won, 8-1, over Reshyra Jadooram; Alexis Wells defeated Kindred Grey, 8-2; and Maddie Brown and Emma Wood defeated Jamalyn Harvey and Toran Carlson by an 8-0 margin.

In doubles, the top-seeded team of Johnson and Hudgins defeated Morris and Grey, 8-4. Playing number two doubles, Stewart and Wells played aggressive at the net to win over Carlson and Goertner, 8-3. Brown and Wood completed the sweep with an 8-1 win over Jadooram and Harvey. In exhibition play, Madelyn Johnson and Kathryn Bray won their doubles match, 8-3.
