May Faire on Saturday, May 6, in Mathews will be an “old-fashioned celebration for Mathews residents and visitors,” said event co-chairman John Caramia.
Activities on Mathews Court Green will range from a traditional May Pole dance, to a live seafood cooking demonstration by local chef Jonathan Lewis, to a historical vignettes and photographic collections of days gone by at the Mathews Historical Museum on Main Street.
“Our theme this year is “Celebrating Teachers, Schools & Community: Over A Hundred Years of Public Education in Mathews County,” said Caramia, “and we will provide a great overview of historical materials as well as entertainment for the entire family.”
A visiting vintage bright red fire truck with a large siren will signal the start of activities on stage. Teachers and students will participate in various scenarios throughout the day. Anyone attending the day’s festivities may pick up a free ticket at the Information Desk for a drawing at 2:30 to win $100. Coupons for discounted meals at local restaurants will be offered, a release said.
In the historic Court House, at 11 a.m., a comedy skit performed by Nancy Rowe and Valerie Bass will kick off “Conversations” with local past and present teachers. From noon until 2 at the museum will be a special reception, open to the public, where former teachers and administrators from decades past will be greeted by former students.
The Pound Cake contest judging will be completed by noon and cakes will be on sale at the information desk. Contest winners, along with the grand prize drawing for $100 will be announced on stage at 2:30 p.m. The day will conclude with a rousing musical performance by local musicians, the Tidewinders.
