A wild hunting spree that sporadically occurred over eight months in 2024 has resulted in jail time and fines for one Mathews man and the arrest of another, who failed to appear in Mathews General District Court on Tuesday, April 7, when the sentencing hearing was held. During the hearing, Brent Thomas Smith was sentenced to a total of 54 months in jail on seven different January 2024 convictions that were related to hunting violations. He was additionally hit with a total of $3,800 in fines and plus court costs on those and 13 additional convictions and will be required to pay $1,000 in replacement costs to the Commonwealth of Virginia for animals that he killed. Most of the jail sentence and some of the fines were suspended by the judge, but that left Smith with six months and 15 days in jail and payment of $2,650 of the fines, along with court costs.
