The Mathews Blue Devils hosted the Middlesex Chargers on Friday. Before the first pitch, the Devils recognized seniors Blake Hunley and Charlie Williams during a brief Senior Night ceremony. Hunley has played five years of Mathews baseball, while Williams has spent two years with the program.
Following the ceremony, sophomore Michael Wiatt got the start on the mound for Mathews. He pitched 2 2/3 innings, striking out four Chargers while allowing 10 runs, three of them earned. Sophomore Liam Penick came in for relief and pitched two innings, giving up six runs with only two earned. Sophomore Hunter Horsley recorded the final out in relief.
Offensively, the Blue Devils recorded hits from five different players: Hunley, Wiatt, Penick, junior Zac Salvadori, and freshman Brandon Hubbard. Mathews had an early opportunity to answer Middlesex’s fast start in the second inning after Hubbard and Wiatt both reached base, but the Devils were unable to capitalize.
Mathews avoided the shutout in the bottom of the fifth inning when Wiatt crossed the plate for the Blue Devils’ only run, as the Devils fell, 16-1.
The Blue Devils will close out their season on the road with their final two games. Mathews is scheduled to face Middlesex again today, Thursday, May 14, before traveling to Northampton for its season finale on Friday.
