Mathews holds first of several candidate forums

The Mathews NAACP kicked off the local candidate forums, with about 50-60 gathered at the Cobbs Creek Arts Center last Wednesday to hear from candidates for the county’s board of supervisors and school board, as well as the two candidates for the local House of Delegates’ seat.
About the same number of people attended Tuesday’s forum sponsored by the Piankatank Ruritan Club at Hudgins, with that program featuring only supervisor and school board hopefuls. Mathews voters will get one more chance to hear from local candidates at a Gwynn’s Island Civic League forum tonight, Thursday, Oct. 9, beginning at 7 o’clock at the G.I. Civic Center.
The board of supervisors has the only contested local race, with four candidates vying for two positions: incumbents Dave Jones and Mike Walls, running as Republicans, and challengers David Walsh and Patrick Beattie, running as independents.
